New Study Shows Yoga and Mindfulness Reduce Chronic Pain

According to the Journal of American Osteopathic Association a mindfulness-based stress reduction course was found to benefit with chronic pain and depression, which led to significant perceptions from participants with pain, mood and quality of life. 89% of the participants reported the program helped identify ways to better cope with their pain, while 11% remained neutral.

The study found mindful meditation and yoga reduced their pain experience along with depression symptoms. Researchers believe mindfulness meditation along with yoga can restore a patient's mental and physical health alone or in combination with other treatments.

Often chronic pain and depression go hand-in-hand. Patients are looking for new ways to cope with chronic pain in a non-pharmaceutical fashion. The study reveals meditation and yoga can be a viable option for patient's seeking relief from chronic pain.

Curing chronic pain is challenging, but healing chronic pain and restoring quality of life involves learning to manage chronic pain. Mindfulness and yoga are two tools, which may be of benefit to patient's.

As always, speak with your provider to learn more about non-pharmaceutical tools to manage your pain.
