SACROILIITIS

SACROILIITIS IS AN INFLAMMATION OF ONE OR BOTH OF THE SACROILIAC JOINTS, WHICH ARE SITUATED WHERE THE LOWER SPINE AND PELVIS CONNECT.

Because it can be mistaken for other causes of low back pain, Sacroiliitis can be a difficult condition to diagnose. In fact, it’s been linked to a group of diseases and conditions that cause inflammatory arthritis of the spine. Sacroiliitis can cause pain in your buttocks or lower back, and can extend down one or both legs. Prolonged standing, stair climbing, running, and bearing more weight on one leg than the other may worsen the pain.

Causes of this condition include traumatic injury, arthritis, pregnancy, and at times, infection. Physical therapy, stretch exercises, and chiropractor adjustments may be beneficial. Muscle relaxants and NSAID’s are commonly used. Injection directed by fluoroscopy (x-rays) into the joint may help relieve pain.
