Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a form of botulinum toxin that’s injected for medical and aesthetic purposes. When Botox is injected, it produces therapeutic and cosmetic results by temporarily blocking nerve signals.

What different types of facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?

Over time, two types of wrinkles develop on your face. Static wrinkles come from age-related changes such as loss of collagen, thinning skin, and dehydration.

Botox treats the second type, called dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles appear over years of using the same muscles to make facial expressions such as frowning.

When your doctor at South Lake Pain Institute injects Botox into muscles, the medication stops nerve signals that make the muscles contract. As the muscles relax, the wrinkles caused by those muscles are significantly diminished or eliminated.

Botox can soften:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Neck bands

Your facial expressions will still look natural after Botox because your doctor injects into only a few carefully chosen muscles.

What should I expect following a Botox treatment for wrinkles?

Botox treatments take only about 15 minutes, but it depends on the area being treated. After your session, the injection sites may be slightly red, swollen, or bruised.

Any side effects won’t last long and in the meantime, you can cover them with makeup. You won’t need to plan downtime, but you’ll need to wait a few hours before returning to strenuous activities.

You’ll see the difference in about 24-48 hours. Botox lasts up to four months, and when it starts to wear off, you can get another treatment to maintain your results.*

How does Botox relieve excessive underarm sweating?

The doctors at South Lake Pain Institute also use Botox to treat hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating in your armpits. In this treatment, Botox blocks nerve signals in sweat glands, which essentially turns off sweating in those glands.

Your doctor injects Botox into enough glands to reduce sweating while leaving enough working glands to ensure normal temperature control.

When used to treat hyperhidrosis, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in 2-4 days, with the full effect evident within two weeks. Botox may continue to stop excessive sweating for 4-12 months.*
