Knee Injections

KNEE INJECTIONS MAY BE GIVEN WHEN ORAL MEDICATIONS DO NOT RELIEVE KNEE PAIN, YET YOU’RE NOT TO THE POINT OF NEEDING SURGERY.

Because our knees are involved in just about every activity we do – whether we are standing, sitting, walking, running, or jumping – knee pain is one of the most debilitating joint pains you can get. There are many conditions that lead to knee pain, the most common being arthritis and injury. Arthritis in the knee comes in several forms, some of which include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout.

When your knees are in pain, exercise is the best thing to help maintain range of motion and muscle strength. Anti-inflammatory medications and braces may also help to reduce any swelling and relieve some of the discomfort you are feeling. Sometimes, the pain is so bad that these things just don’t seem to help. Surgery is not always the answer though.

FOR MANY PATIENTS WITH KNEE PAIN, KNEE INJECTIONS ARE THE BEST OPTION FOR PAIN RELIEF. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF KNEE INJECTIONS THAT SOUTH LAKE PAIN INSTITUTE CAN OFFER YOU.

CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS

Corticosteroids can slow down the accumulation of cells responsible for producing inflammation and pain within the joint space. By injecting them directly into the knee joint, the patient will experience quick relief of pain and inflammation. Their benefits may last anywhere from a few days to six months or more.

HYALURONIC ACID SUPPLEMENTS

In healthy joints, hyaluronic acid acts as a shock absorber and lubricant. This allows joints to move smoothly over each other. However, the acid appears to break down in people with osteoarthritis. Injecting it into the knee may lessen any pain and inflammation.
