Could Your Back Pain be Sciatica?

When your sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down through each leg becomes pinched, compressed or irritated the result can be pain ranging from mild to crippling. This is a common condition known as sciatica.

Sciatica usually occurs due to something pinching or compressing the sciatic nerve as it exits your lumbar spine. While this pain may not always be severe enough to seek treatment, you may be better able to manage the long term challenges and future pain by addressing the pain sooner than later.

Some of the causes of sciatica can be:

Older age- As you grow older your body takes on the wear and tear of activities from your earlier years and this is certainly true for your spine. Herniated discs which happen when the center or nucleus of the disc push through the exterior casing into your spinal canal. This can also occur when bone spurs or excess bone growths compress the nerve.

Carrying extra weight- Excess weight can place a major strain on your body and especially your spine. Studies have found that there is an association between being overweight and experiencing sciatica. Losing weight can have a positive impact on your overall health and spine health.

Sitting for long periods of time- Persons who sit for extended periods of time are more likely to experience sciatica than those who stand and walk more frequently.

Diabetes- Diabetes can cause a condition called neuropathy, which causes a burning or numbness in your legs, which mirror the sensation of sciatica. If you are unsure whether your diabetes may be causing your sciatica it is best to see one of our providers who specialize in pain management.
